Derick Thomas

Basketball Coach
This will be Coach Thomas's third season coaching for the Mallard Creek STEM Academy Titans. His passion and love for basketball led him to coach both sixth grade girls and sixth grade boys basketball teams the last two seasons. His coaching philosophy is built around developing the fundamentals, producing the highest possible individual effort, and requiring a team centered approach from all players. In year one, with tremendous support from the school and parents, he created and coached Crossover Elite, a travel basketball team that allowed players, primarily from MCSA, to play competitive basketball year round. In 2019, Crossover Elite played in two national championship tournaments and were the 2019 Silver National Champions for the sixth grade boys division. He is excited about the upcoming season and look forward to helping the Titans sports program continue to grow.

Upon graduating from George Washington high School, she went on to the University of North Carolina at Asheville where she majored in mathematics and received her teacher's license. At UNCA, she was a member of the women's basketball team. While playing, she helped guide the bulldogs to two NCAA tournaments and two big South conference championships. While playing, Fitzgerald earned a few awards and set a few records. After her four years at UNCA she played one year professional basketball in Germany for the Saarlouis Royals. Coach Fitzgerald will be entering her second year at Mallard Creek STEM Academy and she is excited to work with our student athletes. Coach Fitzgerald is primed and ready to push the girls basketball program in the right direction. This includes creating a positive team environment predicated on the development of skills and fundamentals with an emphasis on shooting, dribbling, passing, offensive and defensive IQ, and footwork. In addition, the athletes will develop peer relationships, self-esteem, leadership, teamwork and physical health. They will be competitive, respectful, great students all while having fun
